I know I promised I would do a better job of posting, but forgive me - I've been painting.

Also, I've been spending quite a bit of time lately working on my networking skills. It is one thing to paint and quite another to find a home for the work.

Which reminded me of something Michelangelo wrote:

"If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery,

it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all."

And yet, many many years later, we are still in awe of his mastery!

Whenever the heat starts to get to me, I think about all the plants that must survive the intense sun everyday - and they do it beautifully.

This morning I will be heading out to the Studio/Gallery to start a couple of new paintings. Because of the layering required for each piece, I usually have 3 to 5 paintings in different stages all going at once.

Thursdays are my longest day at the Studio/Gallery - 12 to 9 pm. The Scottdale Artwalk is every Thursday evening and I look forward to meeting all the people who come out in spite of the heat.

We expecting very hot conditions today with extreme heat warnings which translates to temperatures above 110 degrees (predicting 113 to 114 degrees).

It is still early but I image traffic at the Gallery will be light to none as people stay indoors.

Update: I sent information to the Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine about the Studio & Gallery highlighting my current paintings - a Skyscape Retrospective. To my surprise and delight, one of my paintings was selected to be featured in the July issue!

Some may call it luck - I call it a blessing!

So I've sent out emails to my current list of interested parties and collectors. The response has been outstanding so far.

Next I am sending copies of the magazine to the galleries I am interested in representing my work, but whom I have already had contact.

Every time I look at this piece, it occurs to me that it could be as much about water as it is about sky. Originally from the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", bodies of water are as important to me as breath. Perhaps living in the desert has made water that much more precious.

I am not fond on New Year Resolutions.

I think we determine directions and conclusions based on our need to make decisions.

In close proximity, our decisions are endless - from what to wear today to how will I prioritize my time. In the "big picture", our decisions may seem less crucial since they don't appear to have an immediate impact. To the contrary, I believe these are the determinations that will affect our lives dramatically now and in the future.

That said, and 2011 upon us, I resolve to live in the "big picture" -

to follow my heart wherever it may lead -

to create work with honesty and sincerity -

to not take my life for granted -

and to love as if I today is my last.

An artist's emotions are expressed in their art.

For artists, how we feel - how we see the world - and how we react to our environments are reflected in the work we make. I painted this skyscape last week when I felt as if my life was turning upside-down and churning inside-out. The colors are muddied and darker than my usual palette, while the composition is considerably busy.

Fortunately, my work this week is more upbeat and brighter - mimicking my change of attitude.

My basic palette is listed on an earlier post, but for this work I added phalo green to mix the colors for the blue/green sky. Adding a touch of green to the sky helps the red tone be more dramatic.

It is not often early mornings illuminate this much color in the skies. I had to catch my breath when I went out to water my flowers. The sky changes so fast, I ran back into the house to find my camera before the sky's brilliant complexion shifted.

I used my standard palette for this small painting, which includes:

The weather is cooling, or is already cold in some parts of the country.

The Holidays are just around the corner.

New senators, representatives in Washington, D.C. and in our states

are gearing up to what I pray will be a better Congress,

where party lines will not be drawn

and they will serve the people who voted them there.

People, in general, have always resisted change -

but our lives are in a constant flux of change whether we recognize it or not.

Change can be exhilarating, even in scary times.

A Lesson in Mixing Grays

Mixing grays in any medium can be a tricky sport. With trial and error you can mix a never ending variety of grays to give your shadows character, and your skies a sense of a deeper meaning.

In "Churning" above, I mixed 6 basic grays and then adjusted them as needed to lighten or darken or change hue. The combinations are listed below. Keep in mind, you can warm or cool a gray by adding the compliment of the dominant color. For oils and acrylics, white must be added in very small amounts to bring the gray up to visual. For watercolors, no white is added, only water to dilute if too intense.

1 - Cobalt Blue, Crimson Alizarin, Raw Sienna

2 - French Ultramarine, Raw Umber, Permanent Rose

3 - Phalo Green, Cadmium Red Dark

4 - Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium

Yellow Medium

5 - Sap Green, Cadmium Red Light, Burnt Sienna

and Yellow Ochre

6 - Manganese Blue, Permanent Rose and Raw Sienna

(this one is especially beautiful in watercolor

but keep in mind Manganese Blue will separate slightly

from the gray, creating a mottled or crystalized effect)

These are my favorite combinations. There are many more and many variations within these formulas. Have Fun!

There is something about the expanse of sky, waves making music among the cliffs, the smell of the sea and light bouncing on the breeze from rock to water to atmosphere.

Water has always been an important element in my life. Growing up in Minnesota where every neighborhood has a lake or pond, water was everywhere. Living in the desert, I miss natural bodies of water the most. The first time I saw the Pacific Ocean, it stole my heart.

This new oil painting will be among those in a solo exhibit at Alta Space,
Phoenix, AZ in October, 2010.

They conjure a wide variety of emotions, dependent on what we are feeling at the moment.

The soft glow of light cast on the sides of the mountains symbolizes for me a re-birth of sorts -

a washing clean of dust and debris that only a beautiful rain can bring.

Here in Arizona, summers can be brutally hot,

especially during what the locals refer to as "the Summer Monsoon Season".

The usual dry heat is transformed by a rise in the humidity, making outdoor activities a little miserable and sometimes dangerous due to heat stroke.

The direction and intensity of the wind changes stirring up incredible dust storms

and often downpours of rain.

Lightening shocks the skies and humbles the human.

Amidst all of this, there is an awesome beauty. The cloud formations are magnificent and change quickly.

Session 4, 5 and 6 were spent adding layers of glazes over the color bars.

My original plan was to add a leafy vine entwined around a tree branch, but then I found this incredible bulb and flowers (an onion in reality) at the Farmer's Market. I knew I had to change my plan. The result is "Gentle Contradictions" - a visual conversation about nature and emotions.

First, I have to apologize for the distortion - the bars are actually straight, but shooting the work on the easel is tricky, and I have not yet figured out a way to get around the distortion.

In Session 3, the skyscape is untouched. The color bars get the attention with glazes of oil paint mixed with walnut oil, turpentine and Liquin.

Session 2 is probably one of my favorite painting times. It is when the paint gets thicker - my brush moves faster - and I let the paint do all the work. It is also when the first tapes come off and the first layer of the color bars gets laid in.

Recently I was asked about the different stages of my paintings and how they progress to a final piece. Below is the first session. Keep in mind because I work in oil, there are several days between sessions before I can add more layers.

Bar segments are taped off top & bottom on this piece after several layers of gesso have dried. The first strokes of paint are fairly thin beginning the color scheme and "feel" of the skyscape.

I don't know if I will ever tire of painting the evening sky - there are hidden secrets there among the hues and tones of its complexion.

I find peace and tranquility in the wide expanses, while also experiencing an exhilaration in the ever-changing colors - so brilliant here, yet softly subtle there.

It has been almost 3 months since my mother passed on to a new life, but I often still find myself grieving.

Caring for her 24/7 was not an easy task. However, I am so grateful for having been given the opportunity. In the last few years, as my mother lie dying, she taught me how to live.

She taught me what is really important -- love of family -- don't put off your dreams - they are attainable -- faith can move mountains -- and happiness is a state of mind found in your heart.

My mother is the inspiration for the skyscape paintings you see here and on my website.

My desire is to share the hope and healing I have found in producing them.

while conveying a sense of peace and quiet joy.

I was at our local farmer's market last week and came across this incredible onion. Not growing up on a farm, I had never seen an onion with such tall stalks. I was so excited about adding it to this painting, I think the merchant thought I was nuts. I will have re-photograph it though, because the color in this photo doesn't reflect the true brilliance of the piece.

At times a painting just doesn't seem to be right, but it takes me a while to figure out what is bothering me about it. The top painting is the finished piece. Compared to the smaller bottom image, I believe it has more punch and definition. It almost ended up in the trash, but I think it now has merit after changing the oranges to intense reds, adding more contrast, balancing the greens and changing the top color bar, boxes and sky next to red horizontal.

Three Pears

I struggled with this piece for a couple of months. It originally was a monochromatic still life of pears on a table, but it just didn't have any punch or meaning. Adding the landscape sky behind the pears bring them forward and creates some contrast. Adding the feather and key floating above the canvas gives the piece a surreal feel and carries personal meaning for me, but can be interpreted by each individual differently.

Hello My Friends,

My apologies for not posting sooner.

My husband & I have been in the Caribbean to celebrate our daughter's wedding on a remote beach in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

The wedding was beautiful, as you can see above.

As many of you know, I have been caring for my ill mother the last 3 years. While I was away, God called her home.

As most mother's do, I cried tears of joy for my daughter,

while tears of loss broke my heart.

Thank you all for all your kind words, support and love of my work.

My apologies to my friends for not being able to post new works recently. My mother is severely ill and has been absorbing most of my time. I am putting all my hope in faith, and if you are the praying kind, am asking for a little prayer be sent on her behalf.

As for the small piece above, it was completed a couple of weeks ago. The sky is mesmerizing to me, hence I paint so many of them. It is ever-changing and yet is always there - hanging serenely above us - surrounding our lives and our world (in reality and philosophically).

Winter in the desert is similar to early Spring in the North country. The nights can be cold with some frost now & then. The days are cool but beautiful. We have more rain than other times of the year which affords some incredible cloud formations and fills the sky with color at sunset. Whenever I think I miss the snow, I talk to relatives in the Midwest and Northern plains, and find I am grateful to be just where I am.

My apologies for not posting sooner. Life has been throwing in some curves a little too early this new year. Regardless, I remain optimistic.

This is a piece I did last year, but I don't believe I ever posted it here. I like it for a number of reasons, but mostly because of the surface. I found this door at a junk store a few years ago and just hung onto it until the right painting came to mind.

I was just finishing the foreground tree line, when the song "Little Pink Houses" by John Mellencamp started playing on my ipod. I thought to myself, "This is perfect!" And the rest of the painting finished itself.

Blue and orange are opposites on the color wheel and can sometimes almost make the colors vibrate. Here cadmium orange is grayed slightly with cobalt blue and burnt sienna. The blue sky is toned with burnt sienna. Changing the hues gives the work a more unified feel, while maintaining the drama.

The sky last night seemed to be lit from within -

a stark contrast between the fire below the cloud line

and the pale blue above it.

My thoughts on dark values:

I don't believe there is any true black in nature. Every dark has shades of color captured inside, so I seldom use a black on my palette. Instead, I create my darkest darks using primarily a mixture of ultramarine blue and burnt umber. To this dark, I can add alizarin crimson for warmth, raw sienna to gray the dark, or a number of other colors to change its value or hue.

I painted this small piece yesterday specifically for comparison to "Falling Day". The intensity of the purples here are softer and placed next to the brighter yellows with grayed color as a transition between the two. I believe the overall effect and emotion are totally different. Adding the shallow landscape at the bottom gives balance to the darker areas at the top.

Often as artists, we need to be reminded of the basics in color theory and composition. Over the next few weeks, come with me as I review the roots of a "good" painting. Of course, art is subjective, but I believe the fundamentals are imperative.

The skyscape miniature paintings I have been doing the last year or so actually started out as color studies. Based loosely on photos taken of the incredible sunsets of Arizona, the works are primarily investigations of color juxtaposition. In "Falling Day", I added cadmium red deep between the purple and yellow, which are opposites on the color wheel, to calm their relationship a bit. Adding bits of the purple to the horizon yellows allows for a softer "punch".

A Fire Within

The burning in our hearts for a better world appears to be constant. I am listening to an old Moody Blues album ("Seventh Sojourn"). The world hasn't changed much since the 1970's. The lyrics could have been written today. I found myself saddened to think we have come so far while standing in the same place. We are older, wrinkles caress our smile, we have aches in places we never knew existed - and yet, the world remains the same. War still ravishes. Our young still die in foreign lands. Leaders of countries still want to thrust their will onto the lives of their own peoples. Hatred runs rampant and prejudices still prevail over peace.

There are many wonderful things and people in the world. I don't mean to sound so negative. I wonder, though, if the human race - all colors and sizes - will ever learn to live in harmony.

Over the weekend, we had some storms associated with the hurricane that hit the Baja Coast of Mexico. Unfortunately, we didn't get as much rain as was expected - or we needed. Coming to Terms

It has been a challenging week. Three trips to the doctor with my mother, but she is feeling better and that is a good sign.

I am continuing this series of drawings because paper and pens are extremely portable allowing me to take my work with me wherever I need to go. In "Coming to Terms" I used several shades of brown ink and 2 shades of gray/black. What do you think of the variations?

Migraine

I used to suffer from migraines on a regular basis, but now only get them a couple of times a month. I guess because I have them less often, when they do attack my head, I am less resilient. I started this drawing while in the midst of one - the jagged edges resembling the jagged pain. However, I finished the drawing several days later and so was able to add some peace.

I finished this piece yesterday (finally) and had the need to write some prose to go with it. Mind you, I am not a writer, but sometimes words can establish some insight. So here we go:

Are the paths of our lives predetermined

Or do we make our own present?

No, my Love, the moon moves the ocean tides,

And we can only bob along on the surface.

How do we set free the wishes bound within?

Can we walk through the dark without stumbling over the boxes?

No, my Love, the wind cannot be captured,

And we can only hope to float on the wisps that come our way.

If we actually had wings, would we choose to fly away from this place?

Does flight elude us because our feet are stuck?

No, my Love, the sun is still shining behind the clouds,

And we can only imagine the brilliance of its light.

Before Vacation

10 1/2 x 7 1/2" Pen & Ink Drawing

This a drawing I completed on the plane to Northern California for a much needed rest. Our trip was wonderful and peaceful. If you ever want to get away from the "real" world, I can highly suggest the tiniest city in California - Point Arena. Full of history and some of the nicest locals I have ever met. They welcomed us with open arms.

After a week of rest by the ocean, I am ready to get busy in the studio.

Untitled

10 1/2 x 7 1/2" Black & Sepia Ink

I have started to add color to my Pen & Ink Drawings. I really like the emotional effects as the color moves through the black forms. I have not come up with a title for this piece yet. If you have any ideas, I would appreciate your comments. What kind of feelings do you get from the piece?

My husband & I are leaving for a much anticipated week vacation to Northern California tomorrow morning. The area is a little remote (only has one cell phone provider in that area), so I am not sure if I will have any internet access. If I can find access, I will try to post some photos (I am planning on taking many for research material on a new series I want to paint).
